Forum frustrations

I'm getting fed up with the continuing delays in the forum module. The module author is doing it in his own free time, but he's been promising that completion is "just a week away" for about the past month. I consider forums to be a really important part of PeakOilDesign and it really bugs me that we've been without a forum for so many weeks now.

So, I'd like to take a poll among the users here: Do we continue to wait for the update to the old forum or should I try to recreate what we had from scratch with another forum utility?

The drawbacks of starting form scratch are that we would lose all the posts we had (I could eventually get the info itself back, however) and everyone's post counts would reset to zero. Let me know what you think...

It’s worse than I thought

Last weekend my wife and I went to a strawberry festival and brought home a flat of fresh berries for a pretty reasonable price. We had the intention of using quite a number of them to make jam and give us further practice in learning how to can, as we’ve only canned one batch of tomato salsa since learning of Peak Oil.

The lids we used for the tomatoes were from a canning kit I had received as a gift several years ago, and we’ve since acquired a number of jars. We’ve heard from a variety of sources that you shouldn’t use the lids more than once, and being beginning canners we’re complying with that for now.

So, that meant we needed to purchase some lids. No problem, we thought. We stopped into Bed, Bath & Beyond -- a warehouse store full of kitchen supplies -- and searched around for a bit until we decided to ask an employee.

Garden Requirements Update

In earlier posts (Subsystem Design: Garden Requirements and Defining the Garden) we started exploring specific requirements for gardening and food production. Here are some more formal requirements for the that are now incorporated into the Objectives & Requirements Document (doc).

Input requirements:

The FPS shall use organic fertilizer for crop production as specified in the Organic Farming Specification.
The FPS shall use organic mulch for crop production as specified in the Organic Farming Specification.
The FPS shall treat plant and animal disease using non-toxic methods.
The Organic Farming Specification will be defined later.

Changing Our Tactics: Fighting Back

The fact that Al Gore consumes a great deal while advocating reduced consumption is hypocritical. But so am I -- while I’m working toward improving my environmentally damaging lifestyle, I’m still relying on coal-produced power, the city water system, and a sewage treatment plant. It takes time and resources to transition to a sustainable lifestyle and both Gore and myself (and hopefully all of you!) are working toward the same goal. Yes, he still uses far more electricity than the typical resident, but he’s also installed far more renewable electricity sources than most residents. He is among the most affluent people in the world, which just means he has farther to fall and it could take him longer than the rest of us to transform the way he lives his life.

I take a certain satisfaction when I notice that our house is the only one on the street without a garbage can out on garbage pick-up days because I know that we are by far the greenest family in the neighborhood. Yet it also saddens me a bit because I know that since even we are a long ways from reaching sustainability, there is little hope of getting the rest of our neighbors to reach the same goal.

The Flush Stops Here

One of the most vexing problems in designing for sustainability is what to do with human biological waste. We invariably take for granted the simple magic that sweeps the waste away from our homes and into sewage treatment devices. In most cases, the massive community processors and individual septic systems will not function after Peak Oil, which begs an important question: what do we do then?

Poverty blindness

LiveScience published another interesting article on the human mind's interaction with money. From the article:

Research has shown that people become emotionally distressed when confronted with inequality. The privileged minority is particularly affected, and they are likely to have a nagging worry that their cash and prizes are undeserved.

To keep a clean conscience and legitimize privilege, individuals often alter their perceptions of the status quo.

The details of how that mental distortion provides the relief, however, remained a mystery until now.

and

“We assume that people care about justice, at least to some degree, and are bothered by potential departures from fairness,” the scientists wrote in a report of their work published in the current issue of the journal Psychological Science. “In order to maintain their perceptions of the world as just, however, people do not necessarily strive to make changes that will increase the overall amount of fairness and equality in the system.”

So it appears that even the most altruistic among those with wealth might not have the ability to feel compassion for those without. In the case of the environment or Peak Oil, this research could shed some light on why it is so difficult for many people to grasp the idea that their actions are unfairly hurting future generations -- even their own progeny. If wealth blinds us to seeing the damage we cause to the less fortunate (in this case our own children), how can we tailor our message on these issues to elicit a more positive response?

For that matter, how do we establish an economic or social system within a community to get around this human tendency?

Forums still down

The module author is predicting that he'll have it done within a few days, so possibly we can have the forums back up and running by the weekend. Stay tuned...

Shuttle suffers severe hail damage

We were hit by a very strong hail storm at Kennedy Space Center last night, delivering the largest hail I've ever seen (roughly ping-pong ball size). After the storm cleared, we heard word over the net that there was 'extensive' damage to the shuttle's External Tank, and when we saw the video on the monitors we knew there was very little chance we would be flying that way. So, we will likely be rolling back to the Vehicle Assembly Building and either repairing the tank or (more likely) swapping tanks. Our group will probably be offloading our propellants and securing over the next couple days to prepare for roll-back, but I'll try to put a substantive post in tomorrow.

You can see an example of the size of the hail in this picture. This isn't my car, but I had similar damage to mine. Hopefully the dents will pop out.

(FYI: The storm stayed well clear of our house, so fortunately there was no garden damage.)

Today's lunchtime harvest

Kale, strawberries, oregano, bell peppers, and a carrot. All but the strawberries went into Kale-stuffed Pepper Cups :)
